Kona fishing report 4/29/99

Where are the Striped Marlin and Black Marlin? They must be vacationing in different waters this year because there aren't any here in Kona. Even the Pacific Blue Marlin bite has been slow for this time of year. Yes, we've had a couple of flurries of Blue Marlin action (really big ones) but the action only lasted a few days. There's only been an average of one or two Blue Marlin a day coming in from the approximately 30 boats a day going out. Don't give up on getting a billfish in Kona yet though. Shortnose Spearfish (the smallest member of the billfish family) are here in mass numbers. It's the best bite for Spearfish that we've had in a few years. Time to break out the light tackle and fly rods and go for those IGFA world records! Other frequent catches here have been Mahi Mahi (Dolfin Fish), Ono (Wahoo), Bigeye tuna and Skipjack tuna. Over all, the fish catching here has been good and the numbers of Ahi (yellowfin Tuna) coming into the dock is getting more frequent every week. The average weight on these critters has been about 100 pounds. Bottom fishing catches of 20+ pound Kahala (Amberjack) remains to be the easiest target for the angler looking for non-stop, catch-'til-your-arms-hurt fishing action. Aloha from Kona!

See 'ya on the water,
