Kona Hawaii fishing report 1/19/01

The bite we've been waiting for had finally arrived! It started last weekend. The striped marlin are here in full force with many boats getting multiple hook-ups. The blue marlin have also joined in on the fun and there's nearly as many blue marlin coming in as there are striped. Spearfish have also become a regular sight being weighed in at the docks. All this action going on and to top it all off, plenty of mahi mahi too.

I haven't heard of any yellowfin caught by the charter fleet this week but last week there were several landed from the porpoise schools. The only fish eluding the trolled lures lately is ono.

OK, time for this captain to grumble. All that good marlin action and I'm missing out on it! I'm very popular with the Japanese deep jigging (bottom fishing) crowd. The few charters I did have this week were all jigging charters. While I've been sitting there catching amberjack after amberjack after amberjack, I've been watching boats trolling right past me hooking up with marlin and mahi mahi. Don't get me wrong, I love the fast action and hard fight of the amberjack but from my point of view, it can get pretty monotonous. There's one thing that always gets my adrenaline pumping. A screamin' reel with a jumpin', P.O.'d marlin on the other end of it. I just hope I get my chance at 'em before the bite turns off.

See 'ya on the water,
Capt. Jeff Rogers
