Kona Fishing report 1/6/99

The Stripped Marlin and Shortnose Spearfish bite as been phenomenal the past 3 weeks. If you're a light tackle enthusiast, Kona is the place to be. The Striped Marlin are running between 20 and 100 Lbs. and the Spearfish are running between 20 and 50 Lbs. Almost every boat going out is getting some kind of action from these guys. A word of caution though. The big Blue Marlin are here too. 1 or 2 showing up per day.

The Mahi Mahi bite is still going on but not as frequent of a catch as it was last month. The Otado bite has slowed down also. Ono (Wahoo) catches are starting to show up with more frequency even though this is typically the slowest part of the season for them. This is in direct contrast to the Bigeye tuna catches that should be a common catch for this time of year but hardly any have been coming in.

Bottom fishing has been a little slower than it should be for this time of year but it's still the only way to guarantee some fighting action. 15 to 30 Lb. Amberjack on spinning tackle is lots of fun.

See 'ya on the water,
Capt. Jeff Rogers
