Kona Hawaii fishing report 3/22/01

Shortnose spearfish tops the list this month as the most common catch with striped marlin coming in a close 2nd. The spears are running in the 30 to 40 lb. range with this years biggest weighing in at 59 lbs. Most of the striped marlin are running in the 50 to 70 lb. range. There have been a few over 100 lbs. This years biggest so far was caught last week on the Lei Aloha and weighed in at 152 1/2 lbs. This years biggest Pacific blue marlin was also landed this week on Catchum. A private fishing boat with just a husband/wife team on board. The blue weighed in at 908 lbs.

The mahi mahi bite seems to be hangin' in there and should get even better over the next couple of months. Ono are starting to come in with more regularity so it's good news for people looking for some good eating fish. That's if you can pry it out of the captains hands. As a general rule here in Hawaii, the fish belong to the boat. It's a calculated part of the captains/deckhands yearly income. There's only a hand full of us here that regularly filet the food fish and give it to the anglers. If you want to keep the food fish, you should make these arrangements with the captain BEFORE you book the boat.

Big game bottom fishing has been very productive. I've been catching a good mixed bag of gray snapper, amberjack, ulua (giant trevally) and whaler sharks. Because of this fishery, I've been able to maintain a 100% catch rate for the year on all full day and 3/4 day charters. Again, if this is something you're interested in, make the arrangements BEFORE you book the boat. There are very few charter boats that bottom fish (or even know how) in Hawaii.

See 'ya on the water,
Capt. Jeff Rogers
