Kona Hawaii fishing report 11/22/01

The striped marlin season has started. Right now the blue marlin catches far outnumber the striped marlin catches though. The overall marlin bite has been really good for this time of year. Most of 'em are in the 200 to 400 lb. Range. Boats that are just targeting the marlin seem to be having a success rate of just over 50%.

The mahi mahi bite has slowed down a lot. There's still some being brought in but nothing like the catches we had last month. There's still some spearfish coming in too. The ono bite has been very sporadic but if you dedicate your whole day to running the ono lanes, you'll probably catch.

The shibi are still hanging around F buoy along with some small skipjack tuna. The ledge on the grounds is loaded with small bait fish like nehu, oioi and skipjack. There's also some shibi and otaru hanging around.

The bottom fishing bite is getting better. The bite is mostly almaco jacks and amberjack in the 30 to 40 lb. range with some nice size gray snapper (10 to 15) being caught too. It's supposed to be grouper season too but someone forgot to tell the grouper. Maybe next month.
