Kona Hawaii fishing report 10/31/01
Sorry about the late report this month. My computer crashed. I bought a new Dell and (between fishing trips) I'm finally getting most of my programs back in and running.
Mahi Mahi tops the list this month as the most common catch. We get spring and fall runs on these guys. The bigger sizes in the fall. These fish can be more fun than most if you find a whole school hanging around some floating debris. Non-stop action, lots of jumps and some pretty wild action when they get loose on the deck of your boat.
The Pacific blue marlin bite has been just "fair". The good thing is that the average size has increased. Most of the ones being brought in are between 200 and 500 lbs.
The winter stripped marlin run hasn't started yet but they'll be showing up soon. Last years run was reel good but the average fish size was pretty small. The majority caught here in Kona were tagged and released. If the worlds commercial long liners haven't killed most of them since that last run, we can look forward to another plentiful season with even bigger fish.
Winter time is also "Shibi" time. The small bigeye and yellowfin tuna (Shibi) start hanging around the ledges, FAD's and floating debris. They've already showed up on F buoy. They're pretty small right now (1 to 5 lbs.) but in another month or two, they'll be in the 10 to 25 lb. Range.
The bottom fishing bite is a bit slow right now. Only certain areas are holding fish. The most common catches are amberjack, almaco jack and sharks. As winter arrives, the bite will pick up on these and also catches of snapper and grouper.
