Kona Hawaii fishing report 4/18/00

Topping the list of the most common catch this month so far is Mahi Mahi in the 15 to 40 lb. range. A lot of these are being caught in the deep, in the blind. A large number are also being pulled out of the Ono lanes. The Ono lanes are the most productive form of troll fishing right now because the Ono have started moving in too. If it's food fish you're looking for, you won't be disappointed.

For the trophy fisherman. Not so good news. The Pacific Blue Marlin and Striped Marlin bite has slowed down quite a bit. On a good note though, the average size being caught of both the Blues and Stripies is bigger than in recent months. The Spearfish bite had slowed down also but it's not the end of their season yet so, There's still a shot at getting one of these. According to the Solunar tables, the bite will pick up later this week.

The Yellow fin tuna bite is spotty but good. Boats working the porpoise schools are getting slammed with multiple hook-ups. It is an exercise in patience though. You can work the school for hours. Seeing the tuna on your fish finder and even seeing the occasional jumper but the bite happens only when the tuna are ready. When it's time, everyone in the school hooks up. The guys going fishing at night (Ika-Shibi) are doing well with them also.

The Amberjack bite is still excellent and I've found areas where the Bronze Whaler sharks have moved out so, it's not a matter of "if" you catch, it's a matter of "how many" and "how big".

See 'ya on the water,
Capt. Jeff Rogers
