Kona Hawaii fishing report 4/19/01

A lot has happened with the bite in Kona since my last report. The bite has really fluctuated. Both the stripped marlin and spearfish have disappeared, returned, disappeared, returned again and......... well, we'll see what happens next week. During the slow down 2 weeks ago, a bunch of big blue marlin showed up to take their place. There were several a day being caught with the biggest one caught on the "Northern Lights" and weighing in at 1,115 lbs. They landed the beast in just 15 minutes!

The yellowfin tuna are starting to bite in the porpoise schools and again it's the "Northern Lights" who has been on a roll! He's been pulling out several 100+ pounders each week. They're biting deep so dropping down has been more productive than trolling. They are also hitting the surface for "green stick" baits.

The mahi mahi and ono bite has been pretty spotty. There's been sporadic schools of 10 lb.+ skipjacks, yellowfin and smaller oioi along the 80 fathom ledge and the activity is bringing the ono out into deeper water than they usually prefer. The mahi are in there checking out the action too.

The big game bottom fish bite has been fantastic. There was a strong North current to contend with for a little over a week but that's where the experience in knowing what ledges they congregate on to hide from the current pays off. That strong current also brought in some big sharks. We've caught and released several recently. A lot of fun on stand-up tackle.

See 'ya on the water,
Capt. Jeff Rogers
