Kona Hawaii fishing report 2/14/01

The striped marlin, blue marlin and spearfish bite has remained strong since my last report. Nearly every boat out is getting bites. Most of the billfish are small ranging from 30 to 50 pounds but there are also some huge blue marlin being hooked up. Some of the guys are running their light tackle rigs to make the small billfish more fun. Great idea until the big one decides to show up. These are the times that separate the guys who 'know' how to angle a fish from the guys that just talk a good story. Broken line and straightened hooks have been common talk on the radio. Good fun trying though.

The porpoise schools have been producing a fair amount of big yellowfin tuna. My charters often ask me why the yellowfin and the porpoise hang together? Pretty simple answer really. Porpoise are very smart and work well together to heard up the bait fish into tight balls making it easier them to feed on. Here's where you have to give the yellowfin just a little credit for brains. They take advantage of this situation so they can get an easy meal too. There haven't been many baby yellowfin and bigeye tuna on the ledges and buoys as is typical for this time of year. I hope they're just arriving late this year.

The mahi mahi bite has slowed to almost nothing. The good news is that the ono are starting to run now.

Big game bottom fishing has been great! K-IX anglers have made Kona's 'big fish list' 2 times this year already. Some of you noticed (and emailed me) about how I grumbled in last months report concerning bottom fishing. Just to clarify, it's the jigging that bugs me more than anything. Bottom fishing with live bait is much more productive, the average size catch is much bigger, faster action and a lot more fun. A huge bottom fish screamin' out line gets my adrenaline pumpin' too. I enjoy it a lot.

See 'ya on the water,
Capt. Jeff Rogers
