Kona fishing report 2/16/99
Ya shouldda been here last week! All fishermen have heard this one before. Actually,
Ya shouldda been here all last month. The billfish bite was phenomenal here in Kona.
Big Blue Marlin, Stripped Marlin and Shortnose Spearfish galore. The run is over now
and the bite is back to normal. Normal is still good but last month a boat could just about
guarantee a billfish fight even on a ½ day charter. It's only slowed down in the past week
though, you can always email me for current info.
The Ono (Wahoo) run has started picking back up in the past week. It can only get better
from here. The Mahi Mahi bite is very slow with only an occasional catch but the ones
that have been coming in have some good size to them. The Bigeye Tuna are still biting
all up and down the ledges and on the FAD's. Some Yellowfin Tuna are being pulled up
out of the porpoise schools. Very odd for this time of year.
Bottom fishing conditions are poor right now because of a very fast current effecting the
best fishing areas. Bottom fishing is still the best way to guarantee some fish fighting
action even in the less populated areas. Yesterday while doing some deep water jigging
we still managed a few Amberjack and Trevally. The big surprise was when a Marlin
attacked a jig and got hooked in the dorsal fin. It was a real fun fight on light tackle.
Last week one of my anglers also scored a new Hawaii state record fish. The photos
are available on my fish photos page.
See 'ya on the water,
Capt. Jeff Rogers
