Kona fishing report 3/14/99

For those of you that follow the Kona fishing report, you'll remember that last months report came just after a phenomenal, month long Billfish run. We here in Kona were hoping that there was just a temporary lull in the Billfish bite but such was not the case. The Billfish bite now is in the "average to just below average" range for this time of year. There's still some nice size Blue Marlin coming in. The Stripped Marlin bite has almost disappeared. The most common Billfish bite is coming from the Shortnose spearfish. So, if you're looking for something with a nose on it, you might be disappointed but don't give up hope on a fight with a big fish yet! AHI, AHI and more AHI! 100 lb. to 200 lb. Ahi are popping up all over the place. Mostly blind strikes and some coming out of Porpoise schools and small bird piles. There's plenty of light tackle action for the smaller Ahi around the FAD's and the Ahi Koa's. I've talked with some "old time" Kona fishermen and they all say that we're in for a massive Ahi bite this summer (their peak season). The number of Mahi Mahi bites has picked up in the past couple of weeks. Sizes are in the 20 to 40 lb. range. The Ono run is sluggish but steady.

So, what's the bottom fishing action right now? The fact is, I have no idea. No one here does bottom fishing charters on a regular basis except me and I haven't been out in 2 weeks. Last month while fishing in a 3 day, 9 boat bottom fishing tournament, I stripped a gear in one of my transmissions just 1 ½ hours before the end of the tournament and didn't get it fixed until just a couple of days ago. I had 3 anglers on my boat including the 1st place winner Masayuki Oseto who started the first day with the 3 biggest fish for the day in the tournament and on the 3rd day, caught and released the biggest fish of the whole tournament. The tournament photos are available on my home page.
